Made Bayak studied at Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Denpasar Bali. Now lives and works in Bali. He is known with pasticology project that works with plastic trash to be created as art installations. This project has been presented in many exhibitions, workshops and conferences in Indonesia and abroad. some of his exhibitions are Bruised: Art Action and Ecology in Asia, RMIT Gallery, Melbourne (2019), Kuasa Ingatan, Festival Arsip IVAA, PKKH UGM, Yogyakarta (2017), Encounter, Southeast Asia Plus (SEA+) Triennale, National Gallery of Indonesia (2016), and residency project Uncensored, ruangrupa, Jakarta (2004).
In Biennale Jogja this year, Bayak brings forward the particular issue he has been long engaged in: plastic waste. The symbol of pyramid made of plastic waste reflects the remains and legacy of human nowadays. It starts from the smallest waste, either produced by individuals or households, which then accumulated into the communities’ waste in the villages, cities, or provinces; and it keeps escalating until this mess becomes a far greater problem in the global world. Everyone wants their own neighborhood to be free from waste, but it is done by polluting other areas, because no one is eager to allocate sufficient budget to come up with a better solution for this environmental issue.
