Asana Bina Seni #5 in 2023, for the first time presents an Incubation Class. Participants consisted of Individual Artists, Collective Artists and Writers/Curators from various regions both inside and outside Jogja. The Incubation Class takes place on March 28-April 1, 2023.  The Incubation Class is one of the programs that aims to encourage direct learning and discussion with various practitioners, both in general topics and art practice in particular. In the incubation class, participants will learn various cross-disciplinary art approaches through sharing sessions, studio visits, and workshops. Through the Asana Bina Seni Incubation class, all participants, both outside the city and Yogyakarta, will carry out intensive four-day joint activities. This class will consist of two activities, namely general material class and studio visit. Every morning, classes will begin with general material, then continue with studio visit activities. In the studio visit, participants will be divided into small groups according to several major themes of interest of participants. The determination of interest groups is carried out by the facilitator, by referring to the data that participants collect during registration (proposal and portofolio).

In the studio visit, participants will be divided into small groups according to several major themes of interest of the participants. The group consists of several themes including:

  • The Ecology Study Group focuses on studio visits related to ecological themes, ranging from the relationship between art and ecology, to art practices and/or citizen movements that use art/cultural practices as a platform to advocate for environmental issues.
  • The Gender Study Group focuses on studio visits that focus on the theme of gender justice. Of course, what is discussed is not only how to discourse gender in the work process, but also how gender perspectives are navigated in art / citizen practices critically.
  • The Archiving Study Group focuses on studio visits that focus on archiving practices in the arts. In this group, participants will learn from communities/artists who do archiving as a politically charged data organizing practice, and even become a tool in supporting citizen movements and discourse on socio-cultural issues.

At the first meeting of this Incubation Class, the participants of Asana Bina Seni #5 2023 also met and talked with artists and writers of Asana Bina Seni Alumni in the previous year. Individual artist participants with Riyan Kresnandi, Mutia Bunga and Candrani Yulis, Collective Artist participants with Studio Malya, Curation Canteen and Puan Pualam, and Writer/Curator participants with Arlingga, Mega Nur and Andika Wahyu.
