SENIMAN PESERTA
This Thing series is concerned with the everydayness of forms. My work deals with forms we are all familiar with. We often encounter the elements that make up the works of this on-going series, such as materials and colors, in everyday objects, for example furniture. I observe and analyze everyday objects. And when I understand the structures of these everyday objects, I take out elements from a systematic structure that catch my eye. Next, with a formalist approach, I use these elements to create the works in the series This Thing. Each work in the series This Thing is characterized by a certain anonymity to open up the possibility of many different perceptions, experiences and interpretations.
To determine the size and dimensions of an artwork, I use my body. Apart from proportionality of my own body (or, in more general terms, ergonomics), I also use my own experiences, including feelings and thoughts, to determine how I scale my works. Beside for scaling the works, I use my body as a reference to create a composition of different elements into a work. Both my body and my work – and, of course, the everyday objects I deal with in my practice – exist within space. And each space is characterized by flows and rhythms, volume, shadow and light. I observe and analyze space, and when understand the spatial elements, I use these to create a composition of my work(s) within space to entice an embodied relationship to/with my work as well as to/with/in space. The ongoing series This Thing is, in an abstract way, an analysis of and commentary on our material culture, specifically its aesthetic dimensions: structures, forms, materials, colors of which we have embodied experiences within space.
FAISAL HABIBI (l. 1984, Jakarta)
